Astoria, Long Island City, Sunnyside and Woodside lie in the New York State Senate's district 12. Since 1983, District 12 has been represented by Democrat George Onorato. Being that he is a 24 year incumbent it is perhaps not surprising to learn that George is in some what of a time-warp. He has recently said that he thinks our district is actually "conservative". Is this the reason Sen. Onorato is opposed to marriage equality?

Astoria/LIC/Sunnyside/Woodside (Western Queens) for Marriage Equality is a grassroots coalition forming to pressure Onorato and our other representatives in Albany to respect the values of our community by voting YES vote on the marriage equality bill  governor Patterson recently introduced.

WQfME will organize locally and gather a large coalition of marriage equality supporters from all walks of life conducting petition drives, voter registration drives, organizing rallies, going door to door with literature, and applying other direct actions as warranted.

We fully expect Mr. Onorato will do the right thing and vote for marriage equality. If he fails us we will mobilize (within the strictures of NY election law) to ensure that in 2010 we elect a State Senator that is not stuck in a time warp and will vote in keeping with District 12's values.
